Fancy a night out?
Don’t want to pay full price?
How about if you could get your dinner for free by using your mates?
That’s exactly what one restaurant has started doing!
Dinner for free through social media
Now, this won’t be my usual place to grab something to eat (it’ll cost too much to get there), but a restaurant in Italy is offering free food to people who share a photo on Instagram.
The whole idea is that they get free advertising from “influencers” while the person gets to eat at no cost.
You don’t even need to have millions of viewers or have a fancy brand. You just need to have some followers on the social network.

With thanks to Google translate (this has been translated literally – sorry to anyone who speaks Italian..we’re happy to update), their flyer says:
Are you an influencer and you have over 1000 followers?
2. Make a post of the venue, the pot or yourself tagging #THISISNOTASUSHIBAR and @THISISNOTASUSHIBAR
3. Declare the post to the store manager for confirmation
4. Depending on the number of your followers you will be entitled to more dishes offered by us
over 100,000 followers -> we offer everything
from 50001 to 100000 followers -> 8 plates
from 10001 to 50000 followers -> 4 plates
from 5001 to 10000 followers -> 2 plates
from 1000 to 5000 followers -> 1 dish
If you have less than 1000 followers sign up for our newsletter now
Our clients pamper them all
So it’s simple.
Just head to the restaurant, order some food, take a photo and upload it to Instagram and, depending on how many followers you have, you next dish/es will be free.
If you’ve got a half decent following on Instagram, you can snap your way through a cheap night out!
With 1,000 followers you can get one dish for free…and if you’ve got as many as 100,000 you can get your whole meal for free.
Now, we’re not going to jet off any time soon to Italy, but I can’t see why other restaurants might start doing the same thing closer to home (so give us a quick follow to boost our chances if it does happen – thank you 😉 )
Does it work?
Using social media like this is working.
There are loads of snaps promoting the “This Is Not A Sushi Bar” restaurant who are running this deal.
This chap is a recent diner at the restaurant and looks like he’s having a fantastic time…(kinda)!
And with just over 1,000 followers, he still managed to get a freebie.

The restaurant owners told The Telegraph:
“A pop-up restaurant in London came up with a similar idea a couple of years ago, but it only lasted a few weeks. The same thing happened in St Petersburg.”
Some hotels do this already for “influencers” or people who can show they are popular on social media and it probably won’t be long until it becomes part of everyday living.
So, if you can show that you’re social savvy then you might start getting stuff for nothing.
Anyone seen the Black Mirror episode called Nosedive?
This offer kinda reminds me of that show. You need to be nice, post good reviews on your online network and your own society rating goes up.
It almost like the future might be TrustPilot for people.
At the moment this is working. The restaurant is getting followers, some free advertising and customers are getting free food.
But, would this encourage you to up your social following?
Or would you prefer to stick with a standard 2 for 1 offer on meals?
