When you come up against what seems the impossible, it’s at this moment where your determination and desire to achieve and succeed will see you through.
I was walking through town last Thursday when from afar I heard someone shout my name. Turning around I saw this guy walking towards me with a huge grin on his face and instantly I recognised him. It was my old work friend Mark from back when I was in the print industry.
“Hey Ricky, how are you?” Mark asked. “How’s it going in the print; busy?”
“Actually,” I told him, “I’m not working in the print anymore.”
“Really, what are you doing now then?” Mark asked.
“Have you heard of Skint Dad?” I asked him. Shaking his head like I was speaking a different language I started to tell him how I now run a personal finance blog and write for a living full time.
Chuckling to himself he said, “A personal finance site? Do you take your own advice as when I knew you, you were awful with money!”
“I certainly do, although I do still get it wrong occasionally.”
“Well obviously something has changed as I would never in a million year guess you’d be writing about saving money, especially given your track record in the past!” Mark stated with a grin.
“You do have a point Mark, but people can change and in the last couple of years I’ve really have come far!”
It’s all about the journey
And I really have come far. Thinking back to the middle of 2013, we were over £40,000 in the red and were living month to month, struggling to get by, and relying on credit cards, payday loans and handouts from friends and family. I had no idea of budgeting, getting a good deal, or shopping smart, and I certainly didn’t have any savings!
Fast forward to today and that original debt isn’t too far off being cleared, our bills are a fraction of what they once were, and we have a bit stored away just in case of an emergency. Every day I try to learn something new about how to save and make money and how to manage my finances more efficiently and am sharing what I learn with you guys.
Although these accomplishments are great, it’s the way I have got there in the first place which makes my eyes light up. As a child my mum used to tell me “if you put your mind to something you can achieve it, big or small”. Now I admit, I didn’t take much notice of what she said back then as I thought it was just a way for her to get me to finish my homework. Now though, I totally buy into what she said.
As human beings we are capable of amazing things. Whether it’s an athlete achieving a world record or car crash victim learning to walk; when faced with the impossible, we don’t give up easily, especially when backed into a corner.
That was the same for me in my situation. We were in debt, life was miserable and getting up in the morning was hell. When it came to the point of no return though and my own demons appeared before me, I mustered up the will power and with plenty of determination, bit by bit I improved the situation.
Determination will see you through
I’ve recently made some quite drastic lifestyle changes. I’ll be honest and tell you that around six weeks ago I looked in the mirror and I was embarrassed with what was looking back at me. Over the last four or five years my diet had gone downhill, exercise wasn’t a word in my vocabulary, and here I was in 2015 four stone overweight and not even able to run up the stairs without becoming breathless!
So anyway that next day I got up at 5:30am (it was hell!) and headed out. I only managed 2,000 steps that morning before I was exhausted but I got up the next day, the next day after that, and every day since, adding a few steps each time.
This morning when I went out I managed just over 16,000 steps and after stepping on the scales I can happily say that in just over six weeks I have lost 21lbs and am well on my way to achieving my goals.
And that’s the message I want to get across to you today. Whether you’re just starting out on your own personal finance journey, or perhaps it’s something else such as becoming healthier or learning a new skill; it may seem like such a long road ahead but take it from me – you will get there!
Set your goals, break those goals down into sizable chunks and focus on the task at hand. Determination and burning desire to succeed will see you through. It has for me and if I can do it, you certainly can do it too!
