The change, which came into effect from 1 September 2025, is set to benefit over half a million children and could save families up to £7,500 per year per child.
This is one of the biggest childcare shake-ups in years and aims to help parents cut costs, return to work, or increase their hours without childcare fees swallowing up their wages.
Who can get the 30 hours of free childcare?
To qualify, you need to be a working parent or carer of a child aged three or four, earn at least £8,670 per year (roughly 16 hours a week at minimum wage) but less than £100,000 per year, and apply for and receive a childcare code through the official gov.uk website.
Once approved, the hours can be used with registered nurseries, childminders, playgroups, and some preschools.
How much could you save?
According to government figures, eligible families could save up to £7,500 a year per child. For parents with two children in nursery, that’s a potential £15,000 back in your pocket, which is a massive help during the cost of living crisis.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson says this move will “put pounds back into parents’ pockets” and “give children the best start in life”.
How to apply
Go to gov.uk, sign in or create a Government Gateway account, apply for a childcare code, and give the code to your chosen childcare provider to start using your free hours.
Make sure you apply as early as possible because some nurseries and childminders have waiting lists.
Free breakfast clubs are also rolling out
This isn’t the only support available. Earlier this year, the government introduced free breakfast clubs in 750 primary schools across England.
These give children a free meal and an extra 30 minutes of free childcare every morning.
Skint Dad says
Childcare costs have crushed families for years. Doubling free hours to 30 could be a game changer, especially for parents who’ve had to choose between working more hours or paying more nursery fees. Just make sure you apply early to lock in your spot.
