Sainsbury’s announced on 20 October 2026 that eligible Healthy Start customers could receive an extra £3 a week to spend on fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses before Christmas.
That’s up to £18 over six weeks, but you’ll need to register by 9 November 2026, and not everyone with a Healthy Start card will qualify.
We’ve checked the offer with Sainsbury’s, and there’s a catch. You must have previously used your Healthy Start and Nectar cards together when shopping at the supermarket.
Healthy Start is a government scheme that helps eligible pregnant women and families with children under four pay for healthy food and milk.
Who can get Sainsbury’s £18 Healthy Start top-up?
The extra money is available to eligible NHS Healthy Start customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
You must have used your Healthy Start Mastercard and Nectar card together in the same Sainsbury’s transaction between 20 October 2025 and 20 October 2026.
We asked Sainsbury’s whether families could qualify by shopping with both cards before the November application deadline.
The supermarket confirmed to Skint Dad that the qualifying period actually ended on 20 October 2026, the day the offer was announced.
Sainsbury’s also confirmed to Skint Dad that the offer isn’t paid per child. Each eligible customer can receive a maximum of six £3 eGift Cards, worth £18 altogether.
How to apply for the extra £18
Eligible customers must register for the offer. The money won’t be automatically added to their existing Healthy Start card.
To apply:
- Visit the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start application page.
- Follow the instructions to register for the weekly eGift Cards.
- Complete your registration before 11:59pm on Monday 9 November 2026.
The £3 eGift Cards will be sent by email each week for six weeks, starting from 18 November.
That adds up to £18 if you’re eligible and receive all six payments.
What can you spend the £3 gift cards on?
Sainsbury’s says the extra money can be used towards:
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- Frozen fruit and vegetables
- Tinned and dried fruit and vegetables
- Beans, lentils, chickpeas and other pulses
The eGift Cards can be used in Sainsbury’s stores or online.
However, each £3 gift card must be used within seven days of receiving it.
You won’t be able to save all six vouchers to put towards one larger Christmas food shop.
The extra gift cards are separate from your usual NHS Healthy Start payments and have their own rules about what you can buy and when you must spend them.
You can read the full offer terms on Sainsbury’s website.
Skint Dad says:
An extra £18 towards food shopping is worth having, but it’s important to make sure you’re actually saving money.
If you already shop at Sainsbury’s, use the £3 vouchers for fruit and veg you’d normally buy, rather than spending extra just because you’ve got a voucher.
And if you don’t usually shop there, consider whether making a special trip is worthwhile. Travel costs could quickly eat into that £3 saving.
Set a reminder to spend each voucher within seven days so you don’t lose the money.
What if you already receive Healthy Start?
Your usual NHS Healthy Start payments will continue separately, as long as you remain eligible.
The scheme currently provides:
- £4.65 a week during pregnancy, from 10 weeks
- £9.30 a week for each child under one
- £4.65 a week for each child aged one to under four
The money is normally added to your Healthy Start card every four weeks.
Sainsbury’s offer gives eligible customers extra support on top of their usual payments rather than replacing any of the money they already receive.
If you’re pregnant or have a child under four but aren’t receiving Healthy Start, you can check whether you’re eligible in our guide to NHS Healthy Start payments and eligibility.
You can also check the rules and apply through the official NHS Healthy Start website.
Families in Scotland have a separate scheme called Best Start Foods, and Sainsbury’s hasn’t included Scotland in this offer.
