TalkTalk bought by BT out of administration – what customers need to know

by Ricky Willis · published 5 October 2026 at 11:03 · updated 5 October 2026 at 11:03

BT Group has bought TalkTalk and its wholesale business PlatformX out of administration, in a deal affecting around 1.5 million retail TalkTalk customers.

For customers, the main message on 5 October 2026 is simple: your broadband, landline and TV should continue working as normal, and you do not need to do anything because of the takeover.

BT says there is no immediate change to your price, contract or billing, while Ofcom says customers should be able to continue using their services normally during the transition and beyond.

Here’s what TalkTalk customers need to know.

What has happened to TalkTalk?

BT Group announced on 5 October that it had acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited out of the administration of TalkTalk Group.

TalkTalk had been looking for buyers for its consumer and wholesale businesses after a period of financial difficulty.

BT says it stepped in after the sale process failed to find a buyer for the businesses, amid concerns about the impact if TalkTalk collapsed.

The deal covers around 1.5 million retail TalkTalk customers and another 1 million wholesale customers served through PlatformX.

The Government has also intervened on public interest grounds because TalkTalk’s network supports vital services including emergency calls, ambulance and hospital communications and medical alarms.

The Competition and Markets Authority has been asked to report to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy by 19 October 2026.

Will my TalkTalk broadband, landline or TV keep working?

Yes.

BT says customers should continue using their existing broadband, landline and TalkTalk TV services as normal.

There are no planned outages because of the takeover and you do not need to replace your router or TV equipment.

If you have a TalkTalk landline, BT also says your existing phone number will stay the same.

Ofcom says customers should be able to continue using their landline, broadband and pay TV normally during the transition and beyond.

Do I need to do anything?

No.

The Government says TalkTalk customers do not need to take any action and will be contacted directly if there are changes they need to know about.

BT gives the same advice.

For now, continue using your TalkTalk service, account and normal support channels.

You do not need to:

  • contact BT to move your account
  • replace your router
  • change your payment details
  • cancel your Direct Debit
  • take out a new broadband contract because of the takeover.

Will my TalkTalk price or contract change?

Not because of the announcement.

BT’s customer guidance says existing TalkTalk contracts remain in place and current terms and prices remain the same.

Contract renewal arrangements are also unchanged.

That does not tell us what TalkTalk products or services may look like in the longer term.

BT says customers will be contacted directly if anything changes in future.

Am I automatically a BT customer now?

Not immediately.

BT now owns the businesses it has acquired, but its guidance says: “You remain a TalkTalk customer.”

TalkTalk and BT are expected to remain separate and continue to compete while the regulatory review takes place, with TalkTalk continuing to provide and support customers as it does now.

Ofcom says that, following the sale process, TalkTalk customers will become BT customers.

Exactly when that will happen, and what the process will involve for customers, has not yet been announced.

For now, continue treating TalkTalk as your provider unless you are contacted and told otherwise.

Can I leave TalkTalk?

You can still choose to switch broadband provider in the normal way.

However, the takeover does not cancel your existing TalkTalk contract.

Ofcom says anyone thinking about switching should first check whether they are still within their minimum contract period.

Switching before that period ends could mean paying an early termination charge.

So, if you want to leave TalkTalk, check your own contract and any possible charges before agreeing to another broadband deal.

What happens to my Direct Debit and payments?

Nothing changes for now.

BT says existing TalkTalk payment arrangements remain unchanged, including Direct Debits.

Do not cancel your Direct Debit simply because BT has bought TalkTalk.

Continue paying in the usual way unless TalkTalk contacts you with genuine instructions telling you something has changed.

What happens to TalkTalk customer service?

TalkTalk’s existing customer support remains in place.

If you have a fault, billing question, complaint or other problem, continue contacting TalkTalk rather than BT.

BT says existing complaints will also continue through TalkTalk’s current process, so you do not need to start a complaint again.

Customers can continue using the TalkTalk support website or call 0345 172 0088.

Watch out for TalkTalk and BT scams

The takeover could give scammers another excuse to send convincing emails and texts or make phone calls claiming something urgently needs to change on your account.

BT has specifically warned customers that fraudsters sometimes take advantage of situations like this.

It says neither TalkTalk nor BT will ask you for passwords or bank details.

Be suspicious if someone unexpectedly contacts you and says you need to:

  • move your Direct Debit
  • give them bank or card details
  • hand over your password
  • pay a fee to keep your broadband connected
  • urgently move to another broadband package.

If you are unsure, end the call or message and contact TalkTalk yourself using the contact details on its official website or your bill.

If you think a scammer may already have your bank details, contact your bank straight away. You can also call 159 to connect safely to your bank.

What hasn’t been decided yet?

There are still important details that have not been announced.

We do not yet know exactly when TalkTalk customers will formally become BT customers or what customers will need to do as part of that process.

BT says there are no immediate plans to retire the services people currently use, but customers will be contacted if changes are needed later.

The regulatory review is also still taking place.

The Government has asked the Competition and Markets Authority to report by 19 October, while BT says it expects the regulatory review to take place over the coming weeks.

What TalkTalk customers should do now

For most customers, there is nothing you need to change.

Keep using your broadband, landline or TV as normal and continue paying your bill in the usual way.

Do not cancel your Direct Debit because of the takeover.

If you want to switch provider yourself, check your contract first to see whether an early termination charge could apply.

And be wary of unexpected calls, texts or emails claiming you urgently need to move your account or payment details because BT has bought TalkTalk.

If anything changes that customers need to act on, BT says they will be contacted directly.
