Blue Light Card expands to offer huge discounts to teachers

by Naomi Willis · updated 8 August 2024

Teachers can now access massive discounts with a Blue Light Card membership and get money off at stores like Asda, Starbucks and more!

Blue Light Card, known for providing exclusive discounts to NHS staff, emergency services, social care workers, and armed forces, has now expanded its benefits to include teachers.

This exciting development has been met with an overwhelming response, causing the Blue Light Card website to crash due to the high demand from educators eager to access these savings.

What is Blue Light Card?

The Blue Light Card offers discounts on popular brands and services, such as Asda, Apple, Odeon, Starbucks, and Halfords.

These discounts are a way to thank those in essential services for their hard work and dedication.

Now, teachers can join this community and enjoy the same perks.

What teaching staff are eligible for a Blue Light Card?

Teaching and supporting staff working in any of the following are eligible:

  • State Early Years and Primary Schools
  • State Secondary Schools and 6th Form Colleges
  • Special Schools, Vocational Schools, Referral Units, and Centrally Employed

I’m sorry to say that higher education staff are not currently included in this launch. However, there is a specific site about the teacher’s launch that may be updated if things change.

Why are teachers now eligible for Blue Light Card?

Teachers are crucial to the community but face significant financial challenges, high-stress jobs, and modest pay.

Extending Blue Light Card benefits to these groups aligns with the mission to support essential community workers.

How to sign up as teaching staff

You can apply directly on the Blue Light Card site – but there is currently a LONG wait!

In the list of Services, pick Teachers.

You will also need to verify you are who you say you are. There are two methods of verification:

  • Instant email domain verification: If you work at a primary school, you can verify instantly using your work email address.
  • Document upload: If you work at any other eligible school type, you’ll need to upload an official work ID or payslip that includes your name and school. This will be reviewed by the Blue Light Card team, and you should receive a response within 7 days.

It does cost £4.99 to sign up, nut you can easily save hundreds back with the membership!

Due to a high volume of applicants, processing times may vary slightly.

Are teachers blue light workers?

No, teachers are not blue light workers, but they can now get the benefit.

The company’s mission is to save members money and to recognise and reward the dedication of key workers in the community.

Teachers are key workers who often put the needs of others before their own.

The goal is to support them financially and provide access to exclusive experiences to encourage work-life balance and well-being, but the cynic in me says it’s also about Blue Light Card making a tonne of money through new memberships…!
