Amazon Prime Video changes: what you need to know

by Naomi Willis · updated 11 January 2024

Amazon Prime Video, a popular choice for streaming shows and movies, is making big changes in 2024. If you’re a Prime member in the UK, here’s what you need to know.

Ads are coming!

Starting in 2024, Prime Video will begin showing ads.

Amazon promises there will be “meaningfully fewer ads” than on regular TV or other streaming services.

This change is part of Amazon’s plan to keep funding new content into the future.

Amazon isn’t the only streaming service to put adverts between movies and shows. Netflix lowered their price in 2022 – but only if you watch ads.

TL; DR

  • Ads are coming to Prime Video in the UK in 2024
  • No increase in Prime membership price announced
  • New ad-free option available for an extra £2.99 per month
  • Pre-register for the ad-free service to avoid ads on movies and TV shows

No price increase – for now

The good news?

There’s no current change in the price of your Prime membership.

So, you can keep enjoying all those Prime benefits without paying more.

Want to skip the ads?

If you’re not a fan of ads, Amazon has introduced a new ad-free option.

Starting February 5, ads will pop up on Prime Video.

But you can pre-register for the ad-free experience for an extra £2.99 per month.

You won’t be charged until then and you can cancel anytime.

While it’s £2.99 today, Amazon has been clear that they may “from time to time change the price of this subscription”. It could mean it goes up, but it may also mean they offer a lower price as a promotion.

This ad-free option won’t have ads on any movies or TV shows, but live events and Amazon Freevee content will still include ads.

Ads still won’t appear on rented or purchased content.

Prime Video perks: what do you get?

As a Prime member, you get more than just quick delivery.

If you’ve not tried Amazon Prime yet, you can get a free 30 day trial to test it out.

You can access loads of movies and TV shows, including original series like “The Rings of Power” and “The Boys.”

Plus, you can watch Premier League Football live, listen to ad-free music, get fast grocery deliveries, and enjoy special deals and events like Prime Day.
