Think you’re being scammed? Stop, hang up and call 159

by Ricky Willis · updated 30 October 2025

If you ever get a phone call from someone claiming to be your bank and asking for personal details, it can be hard to know what’s real and what’s a scam.

That’s exactly why the 159 hotline was created.

It’s a short, trusted number that connects you directly to your bank if you think you’re being scammed.

Just stop, hang up, and call 159.

It works in the same way as 999 for emergencies or 111 for medical advice, but this one helps protect your money.

How 159 works

When you dial 159, you’ll be asked which bank you want to speak to. You can say the name or tap it in using your keypad. You’ll then be safely redirected to your bank’s customer service team, no scam middlemen, no risk of calling a fake number.

The service costs the same as a national rate call, and if you’ve got inclusive minutes, it comes out of those.

It currently works with most major phone networks, including BT, O2, Vodafone, Sky, Three, TalkTalk and Virgin Media.

And you can reach almost every UK bank through it, including Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, Santander, Monzo, Starling, and more.

Why it matters

Scammers are getting cleverer. They can fake phone numbers, copy official logos, and sound convincing enough to make anyone doubt themselves.

The moment of panic when you’re told your account’s at risk or a payment’s gone wrong is precisely when people make mistakes.

Calling 159 breaks that chain. It gives you a pause to think, check, and talk to your real bank before any money leaves your account.

Since launching in 2021, more than one million people have used 159 to stay safe.

What to do if you’ve already been caught out

If you’ve already handed over card or bank details, end all contact with the scammer straight away. Then:

  1. Call 159 – this connects you directly to your bank so they can secure your account and stop any pending payments.
  2. Report the scam – use the Action Fraud website or call 0300 123 2040 (England, Wales, Northern Ireland). In Scotland, report it at consumeradvice.scot or call 0808 164 6000.
  3. If you paid by card, you may be able to get your money back using Section 75 or the chargeback scheme.
  4. Get extra support – contact Citizens Advice or the Financial Conduct Authority on 0800 111 6768 for help.

A small step that makes a big difference

159 is simple, but powerful. It’s a single number that could stop someone from losing everything to a scam.

It’s also completely genuine. 159 will never call you first.

So next time a caller pressures you to act quickly or asks for personal details, do one thing: stop, hang up, and call 159.

Skint Dad says:

Scams don’t just target the careless; they target everyone. We’ve seen heartbreaking stories of people losing their life savings to smooth-talking fraudsters pretending to be their bank.

That’s why 159 is worth remembering. It takes seconds to dial, and it could save you a lifetime of regret.
