Starting 24 January 2024, Co-op is changing the way its reward scheme works.
This will affect the rewards you get each time you shop.
Let’s dive in and understand what’s going on.
What’s changing?
When you buy Co-op’s own brand products, you currently earn 2p for every £1 you spend back as rewards with the Co-op membership card.
From 24 January, this will be axed, and you can no longer collect any rewards.
Instead, they are changing it so you can get the same exclusive Member Prices across a bigger range of their own brand and branded essential items.
There are currently around 200 products included in Member Prices, and from the date of the loyalty scheme changes, they’ve said they’ll add another 100 discounts.
On Twitter, they’ve commented that customers will see “substantial savings on their shop with immediate discounts being applied at the till. Overall, a bigger saving on Co-op, and branded products.”
If you have any existing rewards, you can still spend or donate them before 31 December 2024.
Co-op shoppers aren’t happy with some taking to social media to vent.
One says: “So I see you’ve decided to do what everyone else is doing and removing the point system on the co op card, raising the prices of stock and “lowering” them back down if you use the co op card to basically obtain free personal data from us. Shame”
Another commented: “Hearing the news that points on co-op products will stop in favour of member prices sickens me.”
Why is Co-op doing this?
Co-op is focusing on giving direct savings to their members.
Co-op introduced member-only prices last year and said members can save around £300 a year, following the lines of Tesco Clubcard Prices, Sainsbury’s Nectar Prices and Morrisons – only allowing discounts for loyalty card holders.
This new change seems to be an extension of that idea, making the discounts only for people who sign up.
Current Co-op offers
Some of the current Co-op Member only offers include:
The Co-op Frozen Meal Deal for £6.
Get a multibuy discount on noodles, sauce and a vegetable pack for just £2.50, saving up to £1.45. Non-members pay £3 (it’s running until 23 Jan).
Also, members can buy two selected Uncle Ben’s rice packs for £2.50.
They are running a pizza and ice cream deal – get two selected Goodfellas pizzas and Diary Milk ice creams for £5. If you’re not a member, you pay £6.
