What’s on offer?

This month, numerous sites that usually charge admission fees or are typically closed to the public are opening their doors for free.

This includes locations that have been used in popular films and TV shows like Pride and Prejudice, The King’s Speech, and Bridgerton.

These events provide a unique opportunity to explore places you might not usually get to see, all without spending a penny.

When and where can you visit?

England

The main event, Heritage Open Days, runs from Friday 12 September to Sunday 21 September, offering free access to over 5,800 locations and events across the country.

London also has its own separate event, the Open House Festival, from Saturday 13 September to Sunday 21 September.

Wales

Open Doors events occur throughout the whole of September, with more than 190 sites participating.

Northern Ireland

European Heritage Open Days are scheduled for Saturday 13 September and Sunday 14 September, featuring over 300 sites and properties.

Scotland

Doors Open Days take place over the weekends throughout September, with hundreds of sites welcoming visitors.

How to book your visit

While some attractions allow visitors to turn up on the day of the event, others might require them to book in advance.

Instead of winging it and chancing your luck on the day, check any specific details for each site by visiting their official pages.

If booking is necessary, you’ll find a link or instructions on how to do so.

Even if no booking is needed, it’s wise to double-check opening dates and times before you head out.

If you’re looking for inspiration on where to go, head over to MoneySavingExpert, where they’ve listed some of the most popular and interesting places you can visit.

Why are these sites opening for free?

The whole idea behind these open days is to celebrate and share hidden history and culture with the public.

Some privately owned properties may open due to funding requirements or tax exemptions that mandate public access for a certain number of days each year.

However, most of these sites participate in sharing their unique stories and heritage with everyone.

Final thoughts

Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a cheap way to enjoy a day out, these open days offer a fantastic opportunity to explore and learn about the UK’s heritage.

With so many sites available, there’s bound to be something that catches your interest, so make the most of these free opportunities this September!
