Yes, you can actually make money watching TV

by Ricky Willis · updated 25 October 2025

A UK research panel called The Viewers actually pays people to share their thoughts on TV programmes and ideas for new shows.

You don’t need to be a superfan, work in media, or watch every channel under the sun. You just need to be honest, over 16, and living in the UK.

What is The Viewers?

The Viewers is a TV research panel run by Inquisi Research Ltd, an independent company set up by a former research manager from a major UK broadcaster. They work with TV channels and programme makers who want real opinions from real people about what’s on telly.

It’s not a scam, and they’ll never ask for money. The Viewers is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and follows strict data protection rules.

You can sign up for free at theviewers.co.uk.

What do you do as a panel member?

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be invited to take part in different types of projects. These might include:

  • Giving feedback on TV shows you’ve recently watched
  • Reviewing new programmes still in development
  • Helping with new ideas, titles, or marketing campaigns
  • Sharing opinions about channel changes or upcoming series

Some projects happen in person as group discussions, while others take place online from home.

You can choose what kind of research you’d like to be contacted about, and you’re never forced to take part. You simply pick the ones that suit you.

How much can you earn?

The amount depends on the type of research, but here’s what you can expect:

  • Group discussions: usually pay at least £40 cash for 90 minutes to 2 hours, often more if there’s a short task before or after.
  • Online focus groups: pay similar rates, normally through PayPal or bank transfer.
  • Online surveys: pay between £1 and £10 depending on length, plus entry into prize draws.

Payments are made weekly, so you don’t need to wait to build up a balance.

It’s not going to replace your day job, but it’s a fun and easy way to earn some extra money while sharing your views on the telly you already watch.

How often can you take part?

You can join in as often as you’re invited, though group discussions are usually limited to one every six months to make sure everyone gets a chance. Online surveys, however, can be done as often as you like.

Where does the research happen?

If you’re invited to a group session, it might take place in a hotel meeting room, a purpose-built viewing facility, a broadcaster’s office, or even online via video call. Refreshments are usually included, and most sessions are relaxed and friendly.

If you prefer to stay home, you can stick to online-only surveys and discussions.

Is it safe and legit?

Yes. The Viewers is run by a genuine UK research company that follows the Market Research Society’s Code of Conduct. They’ll never sell your data or spam you.

You may be asked to show photo ID (like a driving licence or passport) before a session, just to confirm you are who you say you are – but your details are kept secure and used only for research purposes.

How to sign up

  1. Go to theviewers.co.uk
  2. Click Join The Viewers and fill in your details (it takes about 10 minutes)
  3. Choose whether you’d like to take part in in-person or online projects
  4. Wait for an email invite when a study matches your profile

That’s it. You’ll then be contacted whenever a new opportunity comes up that fits you.

Final thoughts

If you already spend your evenings watching telly, why not get paid for it? Whether you’re a soap addict, a sports fan, or someone who only catches the odd documentary, your opinions can genuinely shape what ends up on screen.

The Viewers gives you a way to have your say, influence TV programmes, and earn a little extra money – all from the sofa.

More ways to make money while watching TV

The Viewers isn’t the only option if you want to earn a bit extra while sitting on the sofa. You could also:

  • Get paid for your opinions with YouGov – share views on news, brands and politics and earn points for cash.
  • Try Swagbucks – earn for surveys, watching videos and completing simple online tasks.
  • Check out our complete guide on how to make money watching Netflix – covering more ideas you can do in your spare time.

These won’t make you rich, but if you enjoy sharing opinions or watching telly, they’re easy ways to earn while doing something you already like doing.
