Big changes are coming for Netflix users in the UK. If you’re currently on the £7.99 “Basic” plan, here’s what you need to know.

What’s happening?

Netflix is ending its “Basic” plan for existing subscribers. This means if you’re currently paying £7.99 a month, you’ll soon be moved to the £4.99 “Standard with Adverts” plan.

While this new plan is cheaper, it does come with adverts, which might not be ideal for everyone.

Your options

If you prefer watching without any adverts, you’ll need to upgrade to the £10.99 “Standard” plan. This means paying £3 more each month.

For larger households, the “Premium” plan at £17.99 a month could be a good option. Sharing the cost among family members or housemates can make it more affordable.

Why is this happening?

Netflix stopped offering the “Basic” plan to new users last year and is now extending this offer to existing subscribers. One reason for these changes could be the recent surge in Netflix subscribers.

In the first quarter of this year, Netflix gained 9.3 million new subscribers, thanks in part to their crackdown on password sharing.

This helped Netflix achieve profits of over $2.3 billion (£1.85 billion) in the first quarter alone.

Tips to save money

If Netflix’s changes are costing you more, here are some easy ways to save money on your subscriptions:

  • Check your subscriptions: Make a list of all the things you pay for every month. If there’s something you don’t use anymore, cancel it to save money.
  • Ask for discounts: Sometimes, you can get a cheaper price just by asking. Call or email the company and see if they have any special deals for you.
  • Use family plans: If you and your family use the same service, see if there’s a family plan. It’s usually cheaper than paying for each person separately.
  • Share with friends or family: Share your subscriptions with friends or family. Many services let you have multiple users on one account, which can save money.
  • Set reminders for renewals: Use a calendar to mark when your subscriptions renew each year. This way, you can decide if you still need them before they charge you again.
  • Find free or cheaper alternatives: Look for other services that do the same thing for less money or even for free. For example, there are free streaming services like BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub.
  • Bundle services: Sometimes, you can get a better deal by buying multiple services together from one company. Check if you can bundle things like TV, internet, and streaming to save money.

These simple steps can help you manage your subscriptions and make sure you’re getting the best value for your money.
