50 Years of Pride 50p overview
The 50 Years of Pride 50p coin was released into circulation on 25 October 2022. The coin was introduced into UK circulation online and via Post Offices.
It celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pride UK and features a rainbow design with the word ‘Pride’ in the centre, while the obverse or back of the design features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Pride is a celebration of people from the LGBTQ+ rights community, and this coin represents the first time Pride has been celebrated on a coin in the UK. This is meaningful to collectors, despite there being a large circulation of 5,000,000 coins.
Collectable coins typically gain value from rarity. Another factor that is important is how common the theme is. As this is the first Pride coin, it will be extremely sought after. This could lead to a greater value as time goes by.
The iconic reverse design of the 50 Years of Pride 50p is the work of writer, artist, and LGBTQ activist Dominique Holmes. Five rainbows are shown, each with one of Pride London’s key values: Pride, Protest, Visibility, Unity and Equality.
The Progress Pride flag also features on the coin. It underlines the importance of diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community.
The obverse designer of the Queen’s head is Jody Clark. He designed the final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II for the Royal Mint that will feature on UK coins.
The value of the 50 years of Pride 50p coin will be determined by its condition – and if you are lucky enough to find one in your change, you may want to hold onto it.
Many collectors buy their coins in brilliant uncirculated quality and protect them straight away. Coins in circulation are very rarely received in mint condition and may have small marks or scrapes from use.
