Tesla Powerwall 2 owners are being told to check their Tesla app after a new UK safety report warned that some of the home batteries could pose a fire risk.
Affected batteries will be replaced free of charge, and Tesla has already remotely discharged most of the units involved while they wait to be replaced.
What has happened?
The Office for Product Safety and Standards published a safety report for the Tesla Powerwall 2 on 28 September 2026.
It says certain battery cells inside affected units can develop faults over time, which could cause the battery to overheat and catch fire.
The regulator says the affected cells may contain too much lithium plating. This can cause the casing of a cell to crack and potentially create an internal short circuit.
In simple terms, a fault inside some batteries could cause them to become dangerously hot.
The OPSS says the affected Powerwall 2 units do not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.
Is every Tesla Powerwall 2 affected?
No.
The warning applies to certain Powerwall 2 units rather than every Powerwall 2 installed in the UK.
Tesla is contacting affected customers through the Tesla app, so owners should make sure their Powerwall remains connected to the internet and check the app for a notification.
There is no need to assume your battery is affected simply because you own a Powerwall 2.

What should Powerwall 2 owners do?
The government advice is straightforward:
- Make sure your Powerwall 2 remains online.
- Check the Tesla app for a notification telling you whether your unit is affected.
- If a replacement is needed, contact the Tesla Certified Installer that originally fitted it.
- If your installer is no longer available, contact Tesla Support.

Will affected batteries be replaced for free?
Yes.
