The Warm Home Discount is applied automatically to eligible households, but a report in The Guardian warns that simple errors like a bill being in a landlord’s, partner’s or even a former tenant’s name could block payments from going through.
What’s the issue?
The Department for Work and Pensions matches its records with energy suppliers to decide who gets the £150 discount. If the names don’t line up, your account may not qualify, even if you meet the income or benefit rules.
What you should do
- Check your latest bill (online or paper) to make sure your full name appears correctly.
- Call your supplier if the account is in someone else’s name, or if your details are out of date.
- Keep documents ready (such as tenancy agreements or ID) in case your supplier needs proof.
- Ignore scam texts and emails – you do not need to apply or give bank details to receive the discount.
More ways to check if you qualify
The Warm Home Discount rules can be confusing, so it’s worth double-checking what help you’re entitled to. We’ve put together a full step-by-step guide, including who qualifies, when payments are made, and other energy help you might be able to claim.
