Christmas always feels expensive, but this year you’ve got a head start.

Today marks 100 days until Christmas, and that’s plenty of time to make December less stressful, less spendy, and a lot more enjoyable.

So, I’m setting a Skint Dad challenge: 100 days to get ready for Christmas, without draining your bank account. Here’s how it works.

Save £1 a day – end up with £100 Christmas fund

The simplest version is to put away £1 every single day between now and Christmas. By the time the big day arrives, you’ll have £100 ready to go.

  • That’s your turkey and trimmings covered.
  • Or it could pay for the kids’ stocking fillers.
  • Or it might just mean you don’t need to rely on the credit card come December.

If you can stretch it, up the daily amount: £2 a day = £200, £5 a day = £500.

Tip: Keep it separate so you’re not tempted to dip into it. A jar in the kitchen, a sealed money tin, or a savings pot in your banking app all work.

And if you like saving little and often this way, why not try the 1p saving challenge in the new year?

Earn £1 a day – make an extra £100

If saving feels impossible, flip it on its head and earn an extra £1 a day instead. Over 100 days, that’s another £100 in your Christmas pot.

It doesn’t need to be big or complicated, just little money wins that add up:

  • Do a quick survey on sites like Qmee or Prolific. Both can potentially get you a lot more than £1 a day!
  • Use cashback and receipt apps like TopCashback, Shoppix or Storewards.
  • Offer small services locally: pet sitting, ironing, or picking something up for a neighbour.

Even tiny amounts count. If you manage £2 or £3 some days, you’ll smash through the £100 target.

Tip: Keep track of your daily “extra pound” in a notebook or notes app as seeing it grow is a real boost.

Clear 100 things challenge

If money’s tight, try the declutter version of the challenge instead. Every day, choose one thing in your home you don’t need and sell, donate, or recycle it.

By Christmas Eve, that’s 100 things gone.

Even if you only sell 20 of them for £5 each, you’ve just added £100 to your Christmas fund. And you’ll have a clearer home ready for the inevitable influx of new stuff.

Why not try using eBay as they no longer charge seller fees.

Mix and match for maximum impact

Want to go all in?

Do all three!

Put £1 aside and declutter an item each day and try to earn just £1 extra a day.

By Christmas, you’ll have £100 saved, a tidier home, and more cash if you sell some of your clutter, and may have earned £100 too!

Weekly check-ins

The challenge works best if you track it. Each week:

  • Count up how much you’ve saved so far.
  • Note how many items you’ve decluttered.
  • Share your progress with a friend, family member, or online as it helps keep you accountable.

Skint Dad tip

Christmas always feels like a money drain, but it doesn’t have to. A pound here, an item there – over 100 days, it adds up to a calmer, cheaper December.

Final thought

100 days might sound like forever, but it’ll fly by. Whether you save £1 a day, declutter one thing a day, or both, by the time Christmas comes around, you’ll be ready.

Less clutter, less debt, less stress, and more time to actually enjoy the festive season.
