Saturday Night Fakeaway – Beef and Vegetable Chow Mein and Sesame Prawn Toast

by Ricky Willis · updated 16 March 2022

It’s been very busy in the Skint household recently and we haven’t had a lot of time to do a Fakeaway but we needed a special treat this weekend so decided a Fakeaway was a must.

We were also very hungry which is great with a stir fry as you can have dinner on your table in next to no time.

 Ingredients

Fakeaway ingredients

All ingredients used were either supermarket own brands or the lowest price.

We calculated the cost of each of the ingredients separately by looking at the item’s total value, then working out what the amount we would need. For example, mixed herbs are £1.39 for 100g, for a 5g teaspoon full it would be 7p (£1.39/100 x 5 = 0.0695).

Beef and Vegetable Chow Mein

  1. Marinate the beef in the soy sauce and white wine vinegar in a bowl for at least 2 hours.

  2. In a large pan, bring water to the boil and cook the egg noodles for 3 minutes. Once cooked, drain the water.

  3. Heat some oil in a pan and stir fry the beef until browned.

  4. Add the ginger and garlic and stir until the flavours are released.

  5. Pop in the carrots and stir fry for 2 minutes then add the mange tout for 1 minute.

  6. Add the cooked noodles into the pan and stir all together.beef-chow-mein-cooking

  7. Mix the cornflour into the vegetable stock, then add to the pan and stir until it thickens.

Sesame Prawn Toast

  1. Place prawns, garlic, soy sauce, chilli powder and the egg into a food processor and blitz for about a minute.

  2. Spoon the mixture on the bread and spread out evenly.

  3. Shake the sesame seeds over the paste evenly.

  4. sesame-prawn-toast

Press down the seeds with your fingers and cut the bread into triangle quarters.

  5. Fry in hot oil until each side is browned.sesame-prawn-toast

As this is so quick to cook and is a perfect Fakeaway if you have other vegetables in the fridge, as you can cut them small and add them to the stir fry too.

I hate chopsticks. Skint Mum always uses them and decided that this was the time Chloe should start to learn the art of eating without a fork (or her fingers). She tried very hard but is still in need for more practice – lucky we make lots of Fakeaways.

If you wanted to use fresh noodles instead of dry noodles, you don’t need to cook them first. Just add them into the pan at the same point as the cornflour.

Also, if you don’t have a food processor, you could mash the prawns with a fork, then mix the other ingredients in. This will take a little longer and you’ll have a thicker paste but, it’ll taste just as great.

Chinese is my favourite. Often make my own at home but I definitely NEED to try making my own prawn toast!

Made this the other night and it was amazing! Everyone ate it including my 1 & 3 year olds. I did cook some fresh prawn crackers too ;)
