Kids Cough Syrup Recalled at Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and More

by Naomi Willis · updated 20 June 2018

Buying own-brand is a sure fire way to save a few quid. Usually, the ingredients are the same as more expensive brands and they do exactly the same thing.

However, people are being asked to check own-brand children’s blackcurrant cough syrup as you may need to get a replacement.

Bottles of child’s blackcurrant flavour cough syrup are being recalled from supermarkets and shops.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has found an ingredient that could cause mould to grow in the cough syrups.

The mould could make your child unwell or cause a reaction.

While there are no reported cases of this happening at the moment, all affected bottles are being recalled as a precaution.

What cough syrups are affected?

It’s not every single cough syrup that is being recalled.

They have found a small number of bathes that have been supplied to shops like Tesco, Asda, Wilkos, Sainsbury, Morrisons, Superdrug and Poundstretcher.

While you may be able to see mould on some of the bottles, it’s not always easy to see.

People are being warned to not use the cough syrup and take them back to when you bought them – even if it looks like there is no mould.

You will be given a full refund or replacement.

Dr Sam Atkinson, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency’s (MHRA) Director of the Inspection, Enforcement and Standards Division said:

“If your child has recently taken one of these cough syrups, and, in the unlikely event that they have become unwell or had a reaction, please speak to your GP, pharmacist or other healthcare professional.”

It’s also recommended to report any side effects on the Yellow Card Scheme site.
