Sainsbury’s giving cash coupons to customers in need

by Naomi Willis · updated 17 January 2023

Sainsbury’s is reintroducing its scheme to top up government funded NHS Healthy Start vouchers which can help over half a million pregnant women and children.

The top up of Health Start vouchers has returned at Sainsbury’s.

Each time you use your Healthy Start card, you will automatically get a £2 top up coupon when you check out.

You can then go on and use the coupon to buy fresh, frozen and tinned fruit and vegetables.

The top up scheme is running in England and has since been extended to Wales and Northern Ireland.

Until Tuesday, 11th April 2023, eligible customers can automatically get a bonus £2 coupon each week.

As you need to scan your Healthy Start prepaid card, if you are still receiving vouchers, I don’t believe they will be able to print out a coupon.

To get the £2 voucher, you need to shop in one of their superstores, where they have the ability to print the coupon.

However, you can redeem them in both superstores and convenience stores.

The £2 top up scheme last ran in 2021 in Sainsbury’s to help families during February half-term. It was then reintroduced over the Christmas period to help struggling families, and is back again.

The NHS Healthy Start scheme helps support pregnant women, babies and young children under four from low-income households.

You can get up to £8.50 per week to spend on cow’s milk, fresh, frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables, infant formula milk, and fresh, dried, and tinned pulses.

Ruth Cranston, Director of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability at Sainsbury’s said:

“We know that times are tough for millions of families across the country, and that the rising cost-of-living is causing uncertainty for many of our customers, so today we’ve announced that we’ll be topping up the Government funded NHS Healthy Start scheme by £2 for the third time.

“As part of our brand promise Helping Everyone Eat Better, we believe that everyone deserves to eat well, and the cost of healthy food shouldn’t be a barrier to this.

“We hope this additional support will ensure that good, quality food is accessible for everyone.”
