Sainsbury’s is introducing £2 fruit and vegetable boxes at over 200 stores this week.

The boxes, known as “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me”, will help reduce food waste and allow customers to get cheaper fresh fruit and vegetables.

The fruit and veg are surplus stock sold at a reduced price.

Instead of picking up the fresh fruit and veg in the yellow sticker section, you can buy a food waste box for £2.

The fruit and vegetables in the boxes are carefully selected to ensure they are still fresh.

Products which contain allergens, such as celery and organic products, may still be included in the food waste boxes but will remain in their packaging.

The veg boxes are only available while stocks last.

Which stores offer food boxes?

Although Sainsbury’s has said there would be 200 stores offering the “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me” boxes, they have not been able to share which stores are taking part at this stage.

So, you’d need to contact your local store to see if the boxes are available close to you.

These food waste boxes mirror the Lidl Too Good To Waste food box, where you get 5kg of “Wonky” veg for just £1.50.

Reducing costs and waste

Sainsbury’s has launched other initiatives to help save on the cost of fruit and veg.

They are currently running a £2 top up of coupons as part of the NHS Healthy Start scheme.

Last year, the supermarket removed “best before” dates on over 100 lines, including pears, onions, tomatoes and citrus fruits, and over 130 more lines are due to lose their dates too.

The Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me food boxes were trialled in January and have now been rolled out to 200 of their stores.

Richard Crampton, Director of Fresh Food, at Sainsbury’s, said:

“At Sainsbury’s we’re committed to helping our customers access tasty, nutritious food that’s better for them and the planet too. It’s great to see that shoppers have been enjoying the ‘Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me’ boxes, which is why we’re really pleased to roll out the trial to over 200 supermarkets, helping even more people across the country. We believe that everyone deserves to eat well at an affordable price, and we hope this additional support will ensure that good quality food doesn’t go to waste.”
