Bored of scouring the internet, looking for free or mega-cheap things to do to keep your family entertained?
Most things I come across cost an arm and a leg so we just don’t bother.
But, just occasionally, a total gem of a FREE day out appears!
Open Farm Sunday
On 9 June 2024, farms up and down the UK are opening their doors to the general public for the Great British Farm Day.
Each year since 2006, working farms have welcomed more than two million people to see what really happens in the world of farming.
You’ll be able to get an understanding of food and how farming affects our everyday lives but, more importantly, the kids will have great fun taking part in demonstrations, displays and meeting some farm animals.
What can you do during Open Farm Sunday?
Each farm works in a different way and will have different facilities.
Depending on the farm, you will be able to:
- Meet the animals
- See machinery demonstrations
- Go on a hosted farm tour
- Watch static machinery display
- Have tractor and trailer rides
- Enjoy self-guided walks
- Visit the farm shop and fresh produce
- Understand science in farming
While this is usually a free event, some farms will ask for a small donation as an entry. This doesn’t go to the farm but is given to charities.
In 2023, over 170,000 people visited, and there have been over 3,000,000 visitors since they first started.
Do check the details of your local farm before you head out as each one offers different facilities.
Some will allow you to bring your dog, some will have better wheelchair accessibility than others, and some will have catering on-site (if you forget your picnic).

Thankyou Naomi, I live underneath a NT owned castle. I am fortunate enough to be allowed in free because I am local. Unfortunately for some locals it is also a holiday area so parking in the summer is a nightmare when holiday makers use the few spaces locals rely on rather than designated parking areas. I am in my later 70s and not ashamed I have thought of joining the NT as much for their car park as visiting interesting places. When I saw the prices I was really shocked. I am on Pension Credit and would have thought the NT for a reduction for folks like me. I found your site and think it is very helpful. No answers for me today but with the present cutbacks many folks will discontinue their memberships.

What a lovely place to live. Although I can understand it gets tricky during the tourist months. NT does offer a reduction in prices for senior members. Anyone over 60 can get 25% off the adult membership costs. You need to call them, rather than having the option to buy online. I appreciate it can still be a big outlay, particularly when the cost of living is rising (and incomings are not).
