Many commemorative coins issued by the Royal Mint celebrate anniversaries of events in history. In some cases, coins are produced to mark an important milestone in a country’s political landscape, or to commemorate a special event.
The 2012 Olympic Games, for example, saw a series of 50p coins released in preparation for the games. Another 50p that was released marked the UK’s exit from the European Union; known as the Peace Prosperity or “Brexit” 50p coin.
This article will cover all the information about the latter.
Peace Prosperity or Brexit 50p overview
In June 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum allowing the general public to decide the future of the UK’s European Membership. The vote came back showing that voters wanted to leave the EU, and plans were put in motion to make that happen.
Fast forward to January 31st 2020, and the United Kingdom left the European Union. Debates have since raged on regarding the decision.
To commemorate one of the most historically significant events of this generation, the Royal Mint issued 10,001,000 UK “Withdrawal from European Union” 50p coins into circulation, also known as Brexit 50p coins or the Peace Prosperity 50p.
This coin featured the familiar Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse design features messaging saying, “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” hence the coin’s name.
The coin was first unveiled in 2019 and showed the date 31 October 2019; the official withdrawal date at the time. However, delays pushed this back and the final design of the coin shows 31 January 2020 beneath the message of friendship.
Collectors likely won’t find an ultra-rare Brexit 50p, because of the numbers released. The special edition coin is still sought-after 50p, however, because it commemorates such a decisive moment in modern history.
The strong message of, “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations,” on the Brexit 50p coin shows that the UK isn’t cutting ties with neighbouring nations.
As the only official United Kingdom coin commemorating Brexit, it might gain value for a coin collector as time goes by.
And despite the high numbers of coins in circulation, one collector managed to sell his 50p coin for £10,000 on eBay.
Circulation
The circulation level of the 2020 Peace Prosperity 50p coin was 10,001,000.
This high circulation means it is not a rare coin and limits its potential value.
Estimated worth
The estimated collector value of the 2020 Peace Prosperity Brexit 50p coin is around £1.60. This value is estimated for a circulated coin in good condition.
A Brilliant Uncirculated 2020 Withdrawal from the European Union 50p coin is valued at around £4.50.
The secondary market for rare coins values condition and rarity. A 50p where fewer coins were issued is far more likely to command a greater value.
