WHO Internet transaction on your bank statement: what it means

by Naomi Willis · updated 20 October 2023

Why is WHO Internet appearing on my bank statement?

WHO Internet is a shortened name for William Hill Online, who are a bookmaker and betting service.

William Hill Online is a long-running online bookmaker and retailer company that offers customers a wide range of sports betting and gaming services.

So, if you or someone in your household has used their services, that’s likely the reason for the transactions and payments appearing on your bank statement, online banking or app.

Perhaps a family member has signed up for a free trial period and received a couple of regular payments.

If you’ve never used this betting site before, and you’re still seeing these direct debit transactions on your card statement, then something’s not right.

Your bank or credit card issuer details might have been compromised, or your funds were used to pay out fraudulently.

Double-check and report any missing money when you call your bank.

I didn’t authorise a WHO Internet transaction

Do you recall when you last placed bets with this bookmaker group? Remember, it could be delayed payment rather than money going through on the same day.

If you have no purchase history with this betting service, it may be that someone has paid into an account with your debit card without consent. Do you have an account with the William Hill group and, someone has access to accounts with your username and password?

When you spot a payment to WHO Internet on your bank statements or current account, and you’re certain you didn’t authorise payments from the company paying it, you need to contact your bank.

Has my William Hill account been hacked?

If you think your bank account or credit account has been hacked, try to access your account and change your password. Then, inform your bank or card issuer.

William Hill has a stringent fraud and payment fraud and security system in place. Contact them to follow up to see when any bets may have been placed.

You can also report any fraud to Action Fraud.

William Hill operating as different trading names

888 Holdings is the parent company of several brands, including William Hill, 888casino, 888sport, 888poker and Mr Green.

Can gambling transactions affect my credit report?

Generally, no. The odd betting transaction on your bank statements isn’t anything to worry about.

It may only become a problem if you’re a business or looking to take out loans for a large financial commitment like a mortgage. (See: What is the minimum credit score to get a mortgage in the UK?)

Mortgage companies may be slightly worried that you have a gambling problem if they see multiple gambling transactions.
