Why we need to stop being awkward about money

by Naomi Willis · updated 5 November 2025

Most of us avoid talking about money, but silence keeps us stuck. Here’s why being honest can make all the difference this Talk Money Week.

We’ll talk about pretty much anything these days. Our health, our love lives, what our neighbours are up to…but when it comes to money, we go quiet.

It’s strange, isn’t it? We all use it, need it, stress about it, and yet for a lot of people it’s still a secret topic.

A new survey from Loqbox found that more than a third of UK adults don’t feel comfortable talking about their finances with friends. I’m not surprised. For years, I didn’t either.

When Naomi and I were in debt, I didn’t tell anyone. I was embarrassed, ashamed, and honestly thought we were the only ones struggling. Everyone else seemed to be doing fine: new cars, nights out, holidays.

It’s only when we started opening up that I realised how many people were in the same boat.

That’s actually where Skint Dad started, with me admitting I’d messed up, and finding out that talking about it didn’t make me weak. It helped.

If we don’t talk about money, how are we meant to get better at it? We don’t expect people to learn to drive without lessons, yet when it comes to money we all muddle through, pretending to know what we’re doing. You wouldn’t think twice about asking a mate how to make a good curry or fix a leaky tap, but say “How do you manage your budget?” and it suddenly feels awkward.

The thing is, once someone starts the conversation, it gets easier. Saying “I can’t afford to go out this week” shouldn’t feel like admitting failure. It’s just being honest. And more often than not, someone else will say, “Same here.”

Talk Money Week is a good excuse to have that chat, even a small one. It could be with your partner about bills, a friend about saving, or even a quick chat in the Skint Dad community. Those honest conversations can change how we think and feel about money.

Skint Dad says

“Talking about money doesn’t make you nosy – it makes you smart. The sooner we drop the embarrassment, the sooner we all get better at dealing with it.”

So yeah, if you’ve been avoiding a money chat, maybe this is the week to start one.

It doesn’t need to be deep.

Just real.

Because silence doesn’t solve money problems, but talking does.
