Massive (and disappointing) changes to the Asda Blue Light Card Discount

by Naomi Willis · updated 23 April 2024

Big changes are taking place – again – for Blue Light Card discount holders who use their discount as part of Asda Rewards.

Asda and Blue Light Card have once again overhauled the discount scheme for shoppers.

In June 2023, Blue Light Card holders were no longer be able to 10% back on the entire shop. But, could still earn Asda Rewards (as usual) and take part in their Missions etc.

However, they are updating the terms of the scheme again.

From 25 April 2024, they are reducing the cashpot rewards down to just 5%.

While it’s disappointing, it’s better than nothing, I suppose….

Changes to Asda Blue Light Card discount

The discount scheme has not been running long, and now Asda and Blue Light Card are restricting how you get your discount.

They excluded non-fresh items from 15 June 2023, and now they are lowering the cashpot.

As part of “ongoing evolution,” Asda has announced that Blue Light Card holders will only receive a 5% Cashpot benefit on all fresh products across their stores.

You cannot get the 5% Cashpot benefit on anything else (other than general offers run for all Asda Rewards users).

Like other Asda Rewards users, you can still earn Asda Pounds on non-fresh food, clothing, health and beauty, household, entertainment, and homeware products.

What is included in “fresh food”?

Asda classes fresh food as:

Fresh meat

Cooked meat

Fresh fish

Fruit and vegetables

Fresh fruit juice and smoothies

Dairy and bakery

Anything else will be excluded from the offer.

Take a look at a huge Blue Light Card discounts list.

What items are excluded?

The following product lines are excluded from the discount:

All Just Essentials products, alcohol, Asda Online Groceries, Food to Go, ready meals including fresh pizzas, fresh dips, fresh pies, Rotisserie Counters, frozen, non-fresh food items, health and beauty, baby, toys, household including pet and laundry, entertainment, George/George.com including all clothing, shoes and accessories and homeware and outdoor products, plants & flowers, Asda Tyres, fuel, tobacco, lottery products including instant tickets, gift vouchers & cards, infant/formula milk, cash-back, fireworks, photo printing, saver stamps, postage stamps, ‘Top-Up’ mobile phone cards, all financial services products and insurances, pharmacy & separate concessions.

From 25 April 2024, Food to Go, ready meals, and flowers have been added to the excluded list.

Will it change again?

It’s disappointing as the discount has not long been running again for BLC/Asda shoppers.

However, hopefully, fresh foods make up most of a shop, so it might not have too significant an impact.

But it does feel quite restricted!

I guess the discount scheme will continue to “evolve”, depending on how much money they lose!

It’s a disgrace. The profits large food retailers are making with their unjustifiable price increases over the last year is disgusting. Now they want to increase profits by taking from the poor once again. Shame on you ASDA.

I spent £32 at Asda today and got 60p on my Blue Light account. I’m guessing Asda underestimated the impact we would make on their profits so implemented the changes.

I fully understand why Adsa and BLC have done this, as an employee for Asda I did find it unfair that those who weren’t working for Asda had the same benefits as those who did (10% reward/ discount) but I do appreciate that those who had a BLC and all the work they do and hope that the evolution of the reward that Asda offers them (and their employees) continues to improve.

The reason asda is changing it is because people are refunding large amount of non essential items like clothes, toys etc and getting to keep their rewards that they earned in the first place so asda is just cutting off that route of deception

Typical Asda thinking about their profit. They say they are helping the community but in actual fact some of their prices are absolute ridiculous. I have shopped in Asda for years and yes I know their has been a price hike right across the board but its not just pennies they are adding on it is sometimes depending on the brand can be as much as a pound or more. Now they have cut the blue light discount as well, take a bow Asda class act not.

I spoke with asda customer services today and guess what, even pre packed fruit and vegetables and meat are not classed as ‘fresh’ So if you weigh the fruit yourself it is fresh but if you buy a 6 pack of apples it is NOT fresh. Same with the meat, you need to get it from a butchers counter for it to be ‘fresh’. Disgraceful. Just a way for them to keep their profits up whilst APPEARING to help emergency workers!

Blue light card should approach the competition, Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl etc, to see if they can do better. If one of them can they will see a huge loyalty shift from the BLC holders.

Very disappointed that you do not get blue light discount on all food products. Cheaper to buy fresh produce from aldi and Lidl. Will save a lot more money off grocery shopping so sorry Asda will think again when I shop . Will go back to Tesco as well .

I’m doubtful that they are actually giving 10% as they should be. Last night i spent £35 on these “fresh” items but only received £1.95 discount instead of £3.50. Not impressed, so checked last week’s full shop, £4 54 on a £76 pound shop, I’m sure I didn’t buy £30 worth of non-fresh stuff!

I think it’s a bit of a con. Yes, a bit of cashback is better than nothing but ASDA do need to clarify further what exactly you are getting your bluelight cashback discount on – I discovered last week it all depends on what Asda are classing as ready meals, ie, pizza from the fresh pizza counter is not classed as a ready meal despite it being ready just to put in an oven so no bluecard cashback on the pizza I bought. Same with bakery – majority of what you can buy from the bakery section apparently does not qualify either, I bought a pack of Asda’s pancakes which supposedly baked in store but no bluelight cashback on those either. Also discovered I got less cashback than I should have so phoned them, went through my purchases (hence the reason how I know about what they are classing as ready meals and bakery) and got an addition 79p added on to my ASDA Rewards. So make sure you total up and check you got what you should have earned on your ASDA Rewards cashpot.

Asda have increased most of their costs by 20% during the last year on a 12% cost of living increase. Their restriction of the BLC discount amounted to 1% cashback on my shop today. They are giving nothing back. Its pointless and not worth the electricity to charge my phone to use the app. Profiteering scumbags masquerading as generous. The devil is indeed in the detail and it is called ASDA.

It’s more than disappointing. Blue Light holders are people who have served the community through thick and thin. For Asda to be quibbling over a few quid and reducing what previously earned us a little cash back as a way to thank them seems rather tight and if I can say, a bit picky. It’s not much of an incentive to keep shopping with them as a loyal customer.

As soon as Asda rewards came in prices on the majority of products increased dramatically to the extent I rarely shop at Asda now. I can’t see how you can get any discount now for blue light holders. Spent almost £200 last week. Including new glasses at the opticians got a whopping £1.50 in cash pot. Certainly not worth going out of my way to shop there anymore.

Very disappointing ASDA reducing the cashpot to 5% on the BLC and that the ready meals been removed completed from the BLC. As I live on my own I don’t buy a lot of “fresh” meat, also ASDA does not clarify what they class as “bakery” for the BLC – I’ve discovery in the past that the majority of what is in the bakery section does not qualify for the BLC. I won’t be renewing my BLC when the time comes.

ASDA also need to clarify what they do class as “bakery” under the BLC – I have discovered in the past that most of their bakery section does NOT qualify. I wouldn’t be suprised if they stop the BLC colaboration altogether in the near future. Not worth paying to renewing my BLC when the time comes now as I only use it for ASDA.

6 supermarkets in a close vicinity, but have been going out of my way to choose asda especially for the BLC discount and rewards. Very disappointed in Asda, prices ramped up, and benefits turned down. Definitely wont go out of my way to choose Asda anymore.

I live alone too so fresh shop is not the bulk of my groceries. Asdas are always located far away than other supermarkets. If there were more and closer to me I might still go but the saving is not enough for me to go out of my way to visit anymore either. I will stick to the food shops near my way instead.

It is disappointing. I had just started to shop at ASDA again earlier in the year and was enjoying the 10% discount. The fact is that my nearest mainstream supermarkets are Aldi, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, and I drive past two Tescos in order to get to my nearest ASDA. Apart from Aldi, I can benefit from a 3.5 percent Bluelight card discount at the other supermarkets by buying Gift cards through Bluelight that can be topped as required. 3.5% off everything compared to 5% on “selected” fresh produce only suddenly looks generous compared to ASDA’s offering. It’s certainly no longer worth my while driving to ASDA.
