Just before the busiest driving days of the year, Asda has cut fuel prices by 3p a litre at hundreds of its petrol stations, giving drivers a small but welcome boost when every pound feels stretched.
It is not life-changing money, but if you are already stopping to fill up, it can take a bit of the sting out of the journey home.

Here’s what the deal actually is, who it helps, and how to squeeze more out of every tank.

What Asda is offering
The price cut applies at Asda Express petrol stations across the UK.
To get the 3p off each litre of fuel, you need to spend £15 or more in the shop when you fill up. The discount is then taken off automatically when you pay for your fuel and shopping together.
The offer runs until 31 December and is available at nearly 300 sites, so it also covers New Year trips, not just Christmas getaways.
Asda says the aim is to help customers save while picking up everyday essentials in one stop, which sounds handy if you need milk, bread, or snacks anyway.
Is it actually a good deal?
If you were already planning to spend £15 in the shop, then yes, it is a straightforward saving.
If you are only popping in for fuel and end up buying things you would not normally buy, the saving can disappear quickly. A 3p cut saves £1.50 on a 50-litre tank, so it only works if you do not overspend inside.

Skint Dad says:
This is one of those deals that works best when it fits into what you were already doing. If you have to force it, it usually costs more than it saves.
Why fuel still feels expensive
Just days before Asda announced its cut, the Competition and Markets Authority said fuel margins remain “persistently high” and not because costs have gone up.
That means the gap between what fuel costs retailers and what we pay at the pump is still bigger than it used to be, even though wholesale prices have eased.
The CMA also confirmed that competition in the fuel market is still weak, which is why prices do not always fall as fast as drivers expect.
A new government-backed fuel finder is due to launch next year, making it easier to compare real-time prices and find the cheapest pump nearby.
However, tools like this already exist – so just use one of them instead!
Simple ways to save more on fuel right now
A supermarket price cut helps, but it is only one small piece of the puzzle. These everyday habits can often save more over time.
- Only chase deals you were already going to use. A discount is not a saving if it makes you spend extra.
- Check prices before you fill up. Prices can vary a lot within a few miles, and a quick check can beat any short-term promotion.
- Keep your car light and your tyres pumped up properly. Extra weight and soft tyres both burn more fuel than you think.
- Drive a bit more gently. Smooth acceleration and easing off early at junctions really do make a difference, especially on longer runs.
- Try not to run your tank too low. Being forced to fill up wherever you are often means paying more.
The bottom line
Asda’s 3p cut is a helpful nudge at a busy and expensive time of year, but it works best when you are already shopping there.
Fuel prices are still higher than they should be, and the government knows it. Until competition improves, small, practical habits are still your strongest defence at the pump.
This deal will not fix everything, but used wisely, it can at least make the journey a little cheaper.
