There have been several UK coins paying tribute to World War II. 2015 saw the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and a 50p was issued to commemorate this milestone.

Many collectors already have mint condition coins stored safely at home. Others might be lucky enough to find some in circulation.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about this 50p and what it is worth.

Battle of Britain 50p overview

The 75th anniversary Battle of Britain 50p coin features a squadron of Spitfires flying in formation. Below this are three airmen scrambling for their planes.

This is in recognition of the intense air battle fought to protect British shores and the decisive victory spurred on by a famous Winston Churchill Speech.

The design was created by sculptor Gary Breeze, a well-known artist with many commissions on display around the UK.

The large number of coins circulated means this isn’t the rarest out there. As a relatively common coin, it isn’t particularly sought-after by serious collectors.

However, there are some versions that are worth considerably more. These include the Brilliant Uncirculated Battle of Britain 50p with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. This differs from the usual style, which uses Jody Clark’s portrait of the Queen.

The original Brilliant Uncirculated version also doesn’t note the coin’s denomination. Another version of the Brilliant Uncirculated coin came out with the denomination noted by the Royal Mint. This meant there were a number of different coin versions for enthusiasts to add to their collection.

As there are only around 35,000 Brilliant Uncirculated versions of the Battle of Britain 50p they are significantly more valuable. It is extremely rare for this 50p to be found in circulation today, so they are much more sought-after by collectors.

A silver-proof version is also available and will command a higher fee than the original coin.

The UK Battle of Britain 50p also enjoyed a reissue date of 2019 as part of a 50p military set sold in presentation packs. This was to mark the 75th anniversary and 50th anniversary of D-Day and the 50p respectively.

Estimated worth

The current estimated worth of the 2015 Battle of Britain 50p coin is around £1.75.

The price of the coin is liable to fluctuate and the condition will have a significant bearing on the final worth.

A Brilliant Uncirculated 50p would be worth much more.

Circulation

The Royal Mint issues a UK Battle of Britain 50p circulation of 5,900,000.
