Boots Advantage Card Payments Stopped After Cyber Attack

by Naomi Willis · updated 4 March 2020

You’re not currently able to make payments online or in store using your Advantage Card points at Boots due to a cyber attack.

Hackers have gained access to email addresses and passwords of Boots Advantage Card holders and tried to break into accounts.

None of the Boots systems were hacked directly, and credit card information was secure.

While Boots are dealing with the issue, they have stopped customers being able to pay for products online and in store using Advantage card points.

Stopping payments will also prevent any hackers from stealing points themselves.

If any points have been spent, Boots has promised to replace them.

This hack comes just a day after 600,000 Tesco Clubcard holders are having new Clubcard issues due to a similar attack.

Boots told the BBC that around 150,000 people were affected, and people would be contacted directly if there was an issue.

With 14.4 million active Clubcards, this is less than 1% of everyone who uses the loyalty card scheme.

Boots wants to have the payment back up and running as soon as they can.

In a statement from Boots, they said:

“We are writing to customers if we believe that their account has been affected, and if their Boots Advantage Card points have been used fraudulently we will, of course, replace them.

“We would like to reassure our customers that these details were not obtained from Boots.”

As passwords have been compromised, please look to change the password you use on the Boots website and app.

It’s worthwhile using a unique password that you don’t use on any other sites.

This will help prevent hackers from trying to use the same password across multiple sites to gain access to your information.

Having a million and one different passwords for different sites is hard to manage as it can be impossible to remember them all.

Some people like to keep a password logbook with all the details handwritten in. This book is unmarked so that you can leave it on a bookshelf, in your bag or your drawer and no one will really know what it is.

You don’t want to go losing it though…

Otherwise, use an online password manager like LastPass or Dashlane.

Boots Advantage Card

The Boots Advantage Card is one of the most generous loyalty schemes out there.

You earn 4 points for every £1 you spend on anything at Boots, and each point is worth 1p to spend.

So, when you’ve collected 100 points, it’s worth £1 to spend online or in store.

They regularly run events to boost your points, and you can collect more using the Boots app.
