If you’ve ever looked at a crumpled Tesco receipt in your pocket and thought, “this is basically money“, then you’re either me… or you’ve found the Clear! app.
Clear! is a UK app that pays you for three things:
- Snapping photos of your shopping receipts (even that pint of milk you nipped out for).
- Answering super‑short surveys for a bit of extra pocket money.
- Optional “spying” on your phone! Ok, not really spying, but allowing the app to anonymously track app usage and ads you’ve seen (more on that in a sec).
It’s basically a low‑effort way to turn your everyday life into coffee/beer money.
There aren’t many receipt scanning apps left anymore, so it’s good to grab a relatively new one.
How it works
- Check first to see if you qualify.
- Use the promo code to get 25p in your wallet to start you off: NG6KTDHM
- Download the Clear! app (Android or iOS)
- Take a picture of any recent receipt, but remember that supermarket ones are worth double.
- Forward email receipts if you’re shopping online.
- Optional: Switch on “Usage Monitor” and “Ad Detector.” That just means the app notices which apps you use, websites you visit and ads you’ve seen or heard. They don’t sell your name or record your chats, as it’s all anonymised.
- Watch your Clear! wallet tick up.
Cash‑out is once you hit £5, usually as a voucher for places you’ll actually spend money, like Tesco, Sainsbury’s or Amazon.
What you actually earn
This isn’t quit‑your‑job money, but it’s a tidy little side hustle for doing basically nothing. Here’s the breakdown:
- 5p per receipt
- 10p per supermarket receipt
- Surveys: 60p each
- Optional tracking boosts earnings if you climb their “levels”
- Refer someone else and earn 75p (plus, new users get 25p), capped at 5 per month.
There’s a max of 22 receipts a week. So if you hoard receipts like a dragon hoards treasure (or even like to womble), that’s about £1 – £2 a week. Add surveys and usage monitoring, and most users make £5 – £10 a month.
Not life‑changing, but enough to cover a takeaway coffee or a takeaway if you’re patient.
The secret to earning more: “levels”
Clear! rewards consistency with “levels”:
- Level 1 – Base rates: 5p receipts / 10p for groceries.
- Level 2 – 2× rewards.
- Level Infinity – 4× rewards plus a 50p bonus every 7 weeks if you never skip a week.
To move up levels, you need to:
- Do the quick demographic survey.
- Upload at least one receipt every week.
- Switch on Usage Monitor & Ad Detector.
If you stop submitting, your level drops faster than my willpower near a Greggs.
Is it safe?
Yes. Your data is anonymised and encrypted.
Clear! doesn’t know it’s your Netflix habit they’re seeing, just “someone in Hull watched 14 hours of Bake Off.” They don’t sell your name or send you spam.
Skint Dad verdict
If you’re already the family receipt hoarder, Clear! is free money. It’s not going to pay the mortgage, but a few quid a month for doing almost nothing? Absolutely. Combine it with other little earners and you’ve got yourself a fun little “invisible income” trick.
In short: scan, tap, cash‑out, smile. Easy win.
Quick tips to max your earnings
- Supermarket receipts pay double – so scan every Aldi, Lidl and Tesco slip you get.
- Check for surveys daily – they disappear quickly.
- Don’t hoard receipts for weeks – only 7 day old or newer receipts count.
- Stick with it weekly – missing a week drops your multiplier.
What is Usage Monitor & Ad Detector?
Whether you turn on Usage Monitor & Ad Detector is really down to if you want to move up the levels:
- Usage Monitor watches which apps and websites you use. It collects data like how often you use certain apps, how long for, etc.
- Ad Detector listens (very faintly) for adverts nearby — including TV or audio ads. But it doesn’t record full conversations. It matches tiny sound‑signatures (“audio hashes”) of known ads.
Both are optional: you don’t have to enable them if you’re not comfortable.
(I’ve not turned them on, and I LOVE making easy money, if that helps you make a decision).
Having these switched on helps you reach higher reward tiers (Level 2 or “Infinity”), which multiply what you earn from receipts & surveys. If you enable them, you may get more chances to do surveys, or get invited first.
The idea is that the data helps advertisers and researchers see general trends: which ads people see, what apps people use, how often, etc. Clear! can sell aggregated info (not who you are) to these companies.
What you should check/watch out for
- Privacy trade‑off: Even though data is anonymised and encrypted, some people still feel uneasy about letting an app see their app usage, websites, or hear parts of ads. If you value privacy, this matters.
- Battery/storage/performance: Monitoring features can use extra battery or data. On older phones or limited data plans, this might be noticeable. (Some users report that.)
- Control/opt-out: You can turn them off later if you change your mind. Using them is optional.
Is it worth doing?
If you’re okay with the minor privacy compromise, yes, turning them on is one of the best ways to squeeze more value out of Clear! You’ll earn more, faster.
If not, you can still use the app with just receipts and surveys, but know that your rewards will grow more slowly and you may miss out on some bonuses.
