eBay UK scraps seller fees – is it time to clear out your clutter?

by Ricky Willis · updated 1 October 2024

If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably got unused items lying around the house – old clothes, DVDs, or tech you don’t touch anymore.

Well, here’s some good news for you: eBay UK has just made selling all that clutter a whole lot easier – for free!

What’s the deal?

eBay UK has ditched its seller fees for private sellers across nearly all categories, apart from vehicles.

This means that when you sell something on eBay, you won’t have to worry about paying those final value fees anymore.

Previously, you’d lose a slice of your earnings when you sold an item. Now, you get to keep more of your hard-earned cash!

They started with fashion earlier this year, and it worked wonders – they saw a massive increase in people selling things like jeans, shirts, and dresses.

Now, they’ve extended the fee removal to almost everything you can sell on eBay, making it one of the most attractive platforms out there for sellers.

Why the change?

eBay isn’t the only player in the game. Competitors like Depop and Vinted have made a name for themselves with their own no-fee selling models, so eBay’s move is a direct response to stay competitive.

While those platforms charge buyers instead of sellers, eBay’s fee removal across categories helps level the playing field, making it easier for private sellers to earn more without hidden costs.

Time to turn clutter into cash

According to research, there are a whopping 294 million unused items sitting in UK households, which could generate over £9 billion in resale income.

That’s a lot of potential cash sitting around gathering dust!

In fact, half of UK households have between £50 and £300 worth of unused items, and nearly a quarter have more than £500 worth of stuff they don’t use.

What’s stopping you from listing a few things and seeing what they sell for?

With eBay’s new fee-free model, it’s the perfect time to make a little extra cash while clearing out your home.

New tools to make selling easier

To make things even simpler, eBay has introduced a few new features. If you’re selling for the first time or just want the process to be smoother, these will help:

  • simplified listings: AI helps you list your items in minutes, with tips on pricing and shipping.
  • simple delivery: eBay’s tracked delivery makes sure your items get to buyers safely.
  • local pick-up: If you don’t want to deal with postage, eBay Local lets people nearby find your items and collect them in person.

A win for your pocket and the planet

Not only will you make some extra money, but selling unused items is also great for the environment.

Instead of throwing things away, you’re giving them a second life – and a survey found that nearly half of sellers feel better about selling than dumping their stuff in a landfill.

It’s also a great way to clear space in your home, with 55% of people saying that’s one of the main reasons they sell online.

The bottom line

With eBay’s move to scrap fees, now’s the perfect time to declutter, earn a bit of cash, and feel good about keeping items in use.

Whether it’s clothes, old DVDs, or tech you no longer need, listing them on eBay is now free and easier than ever.
