Get FREE Carrots For Christmas Dinner (or the Reindeer) from Morrisons

by Naomi Willis · updated 10 December 2019

Morrisons is giving away 125,000 bags of free “wonky” carrots (for Rudolph) in the run-up to Christmas, as well as free oranges for your stocking.

Whether you’re after a freebie for your Christmas Day dinner, or you want to spread some magic with your children, it may be worth heading to Morrisons soon.

Free carrots for Rudolph

On Saturday 21 December, all 493 Morrisons stores will be handing out free wonky and misshaped carrots.

Some 125,000 paper bags can be taken away at no cost.

Carrots can be collected from the front of stores, while stocks last, and I imagine they won’t be in stores for long.

The wonky carrots themselves are perfectly fine to eat.

The only difference you may notice is that they are oversized, misshaped and potentially a bit scarred.

However, they will taste exactly like a carrot and have the same nutritional value (which is all you want, surely?).

Morrisons can sell some 1.6 million carrots in the last weeks of December, but only 10-15% are wonky.

So, they hope giving away the misshaped carrots can help with less food waste (and no doubt convince people to buy more of them in the new year).

You can buy wonky carrots all year round from Morrisons, and they sell for 50p per kilogram, with “normal” carrots selling slightly higher at 60p per kg.

So, while this freebie won’t save you a tonne of money, being able to take them away in “magic” Rudolph carrot bags may help spread some free festive cheer with families over the holidays.

Free Christmas oranges for stockings

As well as free carrots for Rudolph, Morrisons is also giving away free oranges.

On Sunday 22 December, you’re able to get an orange to go into your Christmas stocking (or maybe you want to use it sliced in mulled wine!).

The oranges will be given out along with a story-card about the tradition of oranges in stockings at Christmas for families to read.

If you can’t get to a Morrisons, the tradition is basically that St Nicholas put sacks of gold down a chimney of a poor man (to help pay for his three daughters’ dowries), and they happened to land in stockings which were drying by the fire.

To honour the story and tradition, oranges are now given as a symbol of that gold.

:: Be sure to check out the Morrisons cafe offers while shopping in store as you can always find a deal to eat cheap.
