Side hustles can be a great way to bring in extra cash, but the rise in scams means it’s easy to get caught out. When money is tight, fake “opportunities” can look tempting.

The good news is you can protect yourself with a few quick checks.

This guide walks you through real red flags, simple steps to stay safe, and the types of scams doing the rounds in the UK right now.

Why you need to be careful

More people are searching for ways to earn from home, so scammers copy the look and language of genuine money-making ideas. They promise easy money, fast results and no effort. That alone should make you pause. Real side hustles take a bit of time and learning.

Red flags to watch for

These signs should make you think twice straight away:

1. They want money up front

Any “job” or “training package” that asks you to pay before earning should ring alarm bells. Real employers do not charge you to work.

2. Pressure to sign up quickly

Scammers try to rush you so you don’t have time to think. If someone says spaces are limited or you must pay today, step back.

3. No clear company details

If you can’t find a proper website, a UK address or a way to contact them, it’s likely not legit. Many scammers use disposable email accounts and no phone numbers.

4. Earnings that sound too good

Be wary of anything claiming you can earn hundreds a day with no experience or almost no effort. Real side hustles take commitment.

5. They avoid giving straight answers

If you ask questions and the replies feel vague or confusing, trust your instincts. Honest opportunities explain how the money is made.

6. Fake reviews

Scam groups often use copied reviews or comments written by bots. If the reviews sound too similar or come from accounts with no history, treat them with caution.

Simple checks you can do in minutes

These steps take under five minutes and can save you from losing money.

Search the name online

Type the company name plus words like “scam” or “problem.” If others have flagged it, you’ll see it straight away.

Look for a proper UK company registration

If a business claims to be based in the UK, check it on Companies House. If nothing shows up, or the details look strange, leave it.

Check who owns the website

Scam sites often hide their identity. You can use a free WHOIS lookup tool to see when the website was created. If it’s brand new, be cautious.

Ask in trusted UK groups

Places like the Skint Dad Community Group often spot scam trends early. A quick question can save you a lot of trouble.

Trust your gut

If something feels off, even a little, walk away. There are plenty of real ways to earn money without taking risks.

Skint Dad says:

If someone promises big money for hardly any work, treat it like a fire alarm. Real side hustles take effort, not entry fees.

Current scam trends in the UK

Scams change quickly, but these are the ones hitting people hardest right now.

Fake parcel-sorting jobs

Posts offer high daily pay for simple tasks like sorting parcels from home. Once you apply, they ask for a “registration fee.” The job doesn’t exist.

Paid TikTok or Instagram “engagement” work

Scammers claim you’ll be paid for liking or sharing posts. They later ask for money to “unlock higher rewards.” You never get paid.

Fake investment groups on WhatsApp

You’re invited to join a “team” earning huge profits through trading or crypto. Screenshots of earnings are faked, and you lose money as soon as you deposit.

Parcel return schemes

You’re told you can earn by receiving and reposting items. In reality, the goods are bought with stolen cards. You end up in trouble, not earning money.

App testing scams

Real paid testing exists, but scammers set up fake versions promising high pay for simple tasks. You only realise it’s fake after you’ve paid a “verification fee.”

What genuine side hustles look like

Real opportunities don’t ask for money up front, don’t pressure you to join, and don’t offer massive earnings for little effort.

Examples that are legitimate when used correctly:

  • New side hustles you can start today that didn’t exist a few years ago
  • ChatGPT side hustles: 8 ways Brits are cashing in this year
  • 50+ best and genuine side hustles you can start

They take time, but they don’t trick you.

Final word

You don’t need to fear trying new ways to earn. You just need a few safety steps.

If something feels too easy, too fast or too generous, it’s usually trouble.

Take a moment, check it out properly, and stick to opportunities that give you clear information.

Staying safe is far better than chasing a quick win that ends up costing you.
