Tesco lowers Clubcard points you collect on fuel

by Naomi Willis · updated 28 March 2023

Tesco is reducing the number of Clubcard points you can collect when filling up at their petrol stations.

There have been a lot of changes in the way you collect points recently.

Firstly, they got rid of an app and then reduced the redemption value of points when you use Reward Partners.

However, there is a third thing – don’t they say it happens in threes?!

Changes are coming to how you collect Clubcard points on Tesco fuel.

Clubcard points on Tesco fuel is changing

From 14 June 2023, Tesco is making a change to the number of Clubcard points you can collect.

You’ve always been able to collect 1 point for every £2 of fuel you buy at a Tesco Petrol Filling Station.

However, they are lowering how many points you can collect.

Instead, they’re reducing the value, so you collect 1 point for every 2 litres of fuel.

For my local filling station, that works out at around 1 Clubcard point for a £2.92 spend on unleaded.

While I keep my fingers cross that fuel prices will come back down, it appears Tesco don’t believe we’ll ever go under 99p a litre again.

This doesn’t impact Esso filling stations with a Tesco Express store, as point collection differs.

Ricky Willis, founder of Skint Dad, commented: “Tesco’s decision to reduce the Clubcard points on fuel purchases is disappointing news for its loyal customers who rely on these savings to spend on food or have a treat through the year.

“It’s important for retailers to consider the impact their actions have on customers and strive to provide the best value possible, especially during these challenging times.”

What about spending points?

While the Reward Partners offer has reduced (from x3 of their value to x2), the face value of Clubcard points when you shop in store appears to be the same.

If you want to redeem your saved Clubcard points to buy groceries, a £3 voucher can be used for £3 worth of food.

Similarly, a £3 voucher could be spent on £3 of fuel.

Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be spent in Tesco food stores, Tesco Petrol Filling Stations and at Esso sites with a Tesco Express.

What about Tesco Clubcard Pay+?

If you are a Tesco Bank Clubcard Pay+ customer (their debit card), you will currently earn 1 point for every £1 you spend.

Again, this is coming down.

From 14 June 2023, you will instead collect 1 point for every 1 litre of fuel.

For brand-new customers, there is an offer to get double points for the first three months of using the card.

From 14 June, this is changing, and you will collect 1 point for every £1 you spend using the card, plus 1 point for every 1 litre you buy.

While it might not seem like a massive change with fuel prices as they are, it means we will also collect a lot fewer points.
