Amazon is recognised as one of the pioneers of e-commerce, and it is easy to forget that the whole concept has only been around for a little over 20 years.
In order to get just a little of that Amazon glory for your own site, there are two separate but connected aspects that you need to get right.
The first is your website itself. It needs to look professional, has great content and provide a satisfactory user experience.
That means it works across all platforms, is easy to navigate and is somewhere that visitors want to return to and hang around.
It must also make it as easy and natural as possible for visitors to convert into customers, with clear calls to action showing them how to buy what you are selling.
This leads us to point two, the actual sales mechanism. You need to provide a safe and secure payment mechanism, and that means choosing a payment gateway that customers will be confident using.
Advertising and affiliate marketing
Even if your website is not specifically selling something, it can still make you money through affiliate marketing. In essence, this is where other companies will pay you to promote their product or service via your website.
You might do this by providing links, or include blogs about whatever it is they are selling.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to draw in some revenue. Just remember, you are essentially recommending the product or service, so be careful and selective, or your own reputation could be on the line.

While there is certainly money to be made, none of these strategies will be big-paying successes overnight, and all will require time and effort to build up. That means tying them into a strategic SEO strategy that is designed with your business in mind.
Do it right, though, and you will create a virtuous circle, as the sales and/or affiliate click-throughs serve to further bolster your SEO. And that is when the money can really start to come in.
