by Ricky Willis · updated 2 October 2019

Having to pay out less money each month is something we all want to achieve, but 60% of you reading this now are spending more than you need to. You can fix it in 10 minutes, so you’ll have more money to do – well – anything.

What would you do with an extra £290?

  • Have an epic family day out?
  • Save it for a holiday?
  • Shop ‘til you drop?
  • Clear a debt?
  • Spa trip?

For me, it would go into straight into our savings pot as we are getting a house deposit together. And, even though it won’t buy a house, it’ll help us get there that bit quicker.

How to legitimately make £290

Loads of money

There are 6 in 10 of you, right now, who can make that £290 in around 10 minutes.

There’s no weird online selling, no working from home nonsense and no hyped up claims that you can make millions.

This is a legitimate way make savings to your household budget.

More than half of you reading this can save an average of £290 (and some of you could save as much as £491!!) by simply changing from an overly expensive Standard Variable energy tariff to pretty much any other one on the market.

A Standard Variable Tariff is a default tariff that energy providers put people on. Maybe your fixed deal expired and you didn’t renew it, or you moved house and just started paying your energy bill, without fixing a price.

This Standard Variable Tariff is ridiculously overpriced and probably should be banned. But, it’s a way the companies make huge amounts of profit and it’s a way you are losing out.

What else could you be doing with that cash?

Saving is easy

uswitch and save

Switching and saving on your energy bill is really not hard at all.

It’s not about negotiating with someone, trying to haggle a price, or bartering for a few quid off.

There’s no talking to people, dealing with saying goodbye to your old company or being guilt-tripped out of leaving.

You simply need to visit a price comparison site, like uSwitch, fill in a form with your energy use details, find out how much you can save, then switch.

It’ll take you around 10 minutes.

Your new energy company will take care of everything and your lights won’t stop working during the switch. The only thing you might notice is a different logo on your bill.

But the one thing you’ll definitely notice is the whopping savings you’ll see!

This is probably the EASIEST way you can save money right now!

How much money?!

Collectively, if everyone switched from their rip off tariff, households could save a whopping £3.5 billion!

£3.5 BILLION!

Forget that we can make a saving – just think how much profit the big energy companies are making!

Wouldn’t you much prefer to have some of that money in your pocket, being able to put it to good use for you and your family?

uSwitch uWin competition

uswitch uwin

On top of switching energy providers and saving a wad of cash, you can also chance your luck at winning another £290 of shopping vouchers from uSwitch.

There’s not just one prize, but two winners will be selected every week for the four weeks the competition is running.

One winner will be drawn randomly, and the other winner needs to refer the most people to uSwitch via a unique link which shows just how much others could save on their energy bill too.

It’s all very good you having more cash each month to put towards your family, but why not give your friends and family a chance to have extra spare money too?

Then, if you all make a saving, you could always do something like a big family night out, shopping spree or a trip to a theme park?

Take a look at the full details and enter the uSwitch competition here.

Why not switch?

Why are you not switching?

Is there something putting you off saving money?

Perhaps you like being loyal (although it costs you) or maybe you just think you won’t be able to make the savings we talk about.

You may just be pleasantly surprised 😊

Are you one of the 60% of people who are paying far too much for your gas and electricity?

Please do make some savings so you can give yourself a treat or even do something totally boring with the money. It doesn’t matter what you do with your savings, just please stop being ripped off.

We had the opportunity to interview Rachel Riley, the TV presenter who you may recognise from Countdown. Take a look at what she really thinks about saving money.
