The GroceryAid School Essential Grant gives money to help with school uniform costs and to reduce the financial impact on parents who work in the grocery industry. It is supported by The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust.

There is a government scheme for school uniform grants, run by local authorities, but many councils no longer offer funding to help.

A survey by The Children’s Society shows how many low-income families struggle with the costs of school uniforms. Some are forced to cut back on food and other essentials to help meet the costs.

On average, families spend £337 a year on secondary school uniforms! Getting a grant can really help towards the costs.

The report also shows the horrible impact directly on kids, with pupils being bullied, feeling left out, or even excluded from school – all because they don’t have the right uniform.

You can apply for a non-repayable one-off grant of £150 per child (aged between 4 and 18 as of 31 August 2024) for up to three children in your household.

The grant is open to parents of school-aged children who receive Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit.

As well as school uniforms, you can use the grant to help pay for other school essentials.

Who can apply?

You need to meet some set eligibility criteria to apply for the grant.

You can apply if:

  • You are currently employed in grocery and have been for at least 6 months
  • You receive Universal Credit/Child Tax Credit
  • Household savings are below £4,000

A grocery employer can include supermarkets, wholesalers, manufacturers, suppliers, convenience stores, independent grocers, petrol forecourts or service providers to the grocery industry.

You’ll need to provide evidence of your benefit claim and proof that you work in the grocery industry (payslip).

Applications are being taken directly on the GroceryAid website.

If you do not meet the criteria, see if you’re eligible for a grant from Turn2us.

With younger kids, look at the Aldi school uniform, but it does sell out quickly!

The school clothes grant from GroceryAid closes at 5 PM on Thursday, 20 June 2024.

If the fund has been used, and you have had a sudden drop in circumstances or income in your household, you may want to consider applying for a different Financial Grant instead. This is for a higher amount
