Annual leave at work goes quickly! Some companies only offer a minimum of 20 days, plus bank holidays, which clearly doesn’t stretch for all the school holidays the kids get off a year!

Even if there are two of you looking after the kids, it’s still a struggle to sort out arrangements. So paying for childcare or putting your kids in a holiday club is, sometimes, the only choice.

However, it can be expensive!

One of our local childcare providers charges £30 for a day looking after our kids, which works out around £900 for the whole of the summer holidays!

Collectively, families will pay close to £9.9 billion on childcare over the summer. *crying face* And, due to no other choice, it’s a price you’ve gotta pay!

But, not any more!

Check to see if you’re eligible for tax free childcare that can save you up to £2,000 per year.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Holiday Clubs

Kids aged between 5 and 15 can attend Sainsbury’s Holiday Clubs across the country for just £7.50 a day (the price also includes a nutritious lunch and healthy snacks)!

The clubs run from 9 am to 4 pm (with registration from 8:45), Monday to Friday and will take place in 70 locations (see below for a list).

You’re able to book in places for up to 5 children for as many days as you want.

If you’ve been saving up your Nectar points, you can pay for your child’s place with your loyalty card points! You need to use 1,500 Nectar points (or a combination of Nectar points and money) to pay for the holiday club.

To collect points quicker, look to use the new Nectar app or look at ways to collect points without even shopping in store.

You cannot use childcare vouchers or tax-free vouchers towards the payment.

The cheap holiday clubs are running from 22 July 2019 until 30 August 2019, but some locations may have slightly different dates.

Spaces are subject to availability and will no doubt get booked up fast because they are so cheap, so you should look to book sooner, rather than later.

All bookings must be made via the Active Kids website, and you cannot make a booking in a Sainsbury’s store.

What do the kids do?

kids playing tennis

Hopefully, your kids will get worn out :)

They get involved in a structured (and fully supervised) full-day programme, which is action-packed with activities they may not have tried before.

Kids can try out gymnastics, tennis, quick cricket, dodgeball, football alongside active play and dance.

They can also give circus skills a go, and enjoy arts and crafts.

Kids are grouped in ages, so they’ll not be pushed too far for their abilities.

The activities will help build your kid’s social skills, self-esteem, coordination and physical wellbeing.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We know from speaking to parents that the summer holidays can be a difficult time to keep children entertained, so with our new Active Kids holiday clubs we hope to provide them with much needed support during the long school break.

“Taking part in a club this summer may be the first step in a lifelong passion for a new activity and perhaps even create a future sporting superstar.”

No more Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers

Sainsbury’s Active Kids used to be a voucher scheme run by the supermarket (remember those coupons they used to give out?)

The idea was you spent £10 in store, got a voucher and handed it to your school who swapped them for sport and cooking equipment.

Running for 13 years, and having donated £186m of equipment, the Active Kids voucher scheme came to an end in 2018 and was replaced with the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Holiday Clubs.

So now the school won’t get free equipment, but families will see the savings in their own pockets.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids venues

Here are the 70 schools who are hosting the holiday clubs in 2019.

Your child does not need to attend the school itself to take part in the cheap holiday club.

Each venue updates to show if they are fully booked, and break down the availability by day.

Or you can encourage sports in other ways. For starters you can see if you can cheaply order or hire out tennis rackets for a fast paced game of tennis. Or find out a bit more about where to play in your local area instead, many community leisure centres now often do lots of fun and interesting exercise classes. Alternatively you can even re create your own family version of a school sports day at home. Good luck.
