Morrisons is the first supermarket in the UK to sell food past its best before date using a food waste app.

There are lots of fans of Too Good To Go already, and you can use it to pick up cheaper food from cafes and restaurants like YO! and Caffe Nero.

However, now Morrisons will be selling on cheap food too.

What can you get in the box?

You will get a mixed bag (or box) of stuff, and no box will be the same.

The Morrisons food boxes may have unsold fruit and vegetables, as well as bakery and deli items.

You need to be aware that the food will be near to or just past its best before, but will still be fine to eat.

While each box will hold different things, food will be worth at least £10 and you can buy it for £3.09.

Members of Reduce Your Supermarket Spend have mentioned they’ve had boxes with foods like:

  • Bread, chocolate twists, bags of apples, bags of potatoes, a bag of onions, mushrooms, and carrots.
  • Pack of cooked chicken that was 3 days out of date, a box of plums that were mouldy, a bag of lemons that were mouldy and a loaf of bread that was a week out of date.
  • Potatoes, butternut squash, avocados, bananas, bread, cheese, a mixed variety of rolls.
  • 2 cauliflower, 2 lettuce, 2 large bags of red apples, 3 crusty rolls, a packet of potato mash, 2 bags of potatoes, some tomatoes.

How do you buy a Morrisons food box?

Known as Market Street Magic Bags, they will be available in all 494 Morrisons supermarkets from Tuesday 26 November 2019 – as long as they’ve got stock.

However, you can’t buy the box from Morrisons directly, and it’s not a matter of turning up at the store and hoping like with a Lidl Too Good To Waste box.

You need to download Too Good To Go as it’s all done via the food waste app.

Look at the map and find your closest store. If there is a red dot on the map, it means they’re out of stock, but an orange dot means there is cheap food for you to buy.

If they have food boxes in stock, you need to pay via Too Good to Go. You can pay using Apple Pay, credit card or PayPal.

You’ll be given a collection window (usually between 12pm and 6pm) when you can go and pick up your food.

Head to the customer service desk in store with your mobile receipt, and they’ll get your Magic Bag to you.

You won’t know what food you’ll get in the box until you pick it up from your local supermarket.

Reduce food waste

Morrisons is hoping to distribute 350,000 boxes of food in 2020 and reduce their operational food waste by 50% by 2030.

Jayne Wall, Market Street Director at Morrisons, adds: “We are using technology to help us reduce food waste and to help more people afford to eat well. It will also mean we waste less food this Christmas as it will find a home for products that can’t be sold after the festive period.”

You can save even more money on your food shop with the My Morrisons app.
